Is container deck firefighting a hazard?

Container fires continue to be a critical hazard for all containership operators, and as vessel size and stack heights continue to grow, the task of container deck firefighting becomes even more challenging. As a technology leader in the containership sector, ABS has taken a proactive position on this issue.

Which fire-fighting systems are suitable for container ships?

For the protection of cargo holds of container ships, only fixed gas (CO2 or inert gas) fire-fighting systems have been admitted by the relevant rules so far. The rules also indicate that the systems accepted by administrations as satisfactorily equivalent to the gas system for the performance can be adopted as its alternative.

How can a hydropen system fight a container fire?

Finally, there’s a faster, safer and more efficient way to directly fight container fires on board vessels. The HydroPen system makes it possible to directly extinguish container fires at heights, at deck and below deck on board cargo vessels. No other solution can do that.
